Hokkaido Shrine Photo Featured on In-flight Magazine

A Day in Sapporo 1

Several months ago, I was fortunate to be contacted by the editor of an in-flight magazine who is putting together an article on Sapporo and was asking whether I am keen to lease my photos that was taken in Sapporo during my Japan Trip in 2009.

After some clarifications (type, resolution, credits, etc) on how the images will be used, I sent over a total of 43MB worth of high-resolution photos for their selection. The package consists photos of Hokkaido Shrine, Sapporo Clock Tower and Sapporo Beer Garden.

Sometime later, I was glad to be informed that my Hokkaido Shrine photo (above) was used in the Sapporo feature in the December 2010 – January 2011 issue of Aspire, Hong Kong Airlines’ in-flight magazine. A soft copy of the magazine was also sent to me! Please see below. 🙂

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

14th May 2009 – Hakodate Morning Market (asa-ichi) in search of breakfast.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Just need to cross the road from hotel and we reached Hakodate Morning Market.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

One of the many stalls selling dried products. From one of the stalls, we bought 2 packets of cheese scallops (each 500 grams) and 3 packets of cuttlefish. Total damage is ¥5000.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Another stall that sells seasoning paste used for cooking.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

On the left, a store selling clothes. It’s still early and there weren’t much people around.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Beside the dried good area, this portion sells more of the wet stuffs – vegetables, fruits, meat, etc.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

The left side are some restaurants.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Seafood galore! This area is round the main Hakodate Morning Market entrance.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Huge selection of Hokkaido crabs at reasonable prices up for grabs.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Our accommodation last night – Hotel New Ohte (opposite Hakodate Morning Market).

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Finally decided on a restaurant to have our breakfast – Hakodate’s renowned seafood-topped donburi (rice bowl).

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Hakodate’s crab donburi ¥1260.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Hakodate’s signature ika (squid) donburi ¥1890. Fresh live squid on top that will wriggle (dance) when you pour soy sauce over it.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

The chef will help you to cut the head portion. My partner squirms with discomfort while I am eating this. LOL!

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

This is how the squid look like when alive. 😛

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Cloudy skies – seems like it’s going to pour soon. To avoid getting caught in the rain, we hastily went back to hotel to check-out and head towards JR Hakodate Bus Terminal.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

The interior of JR Hakodate Station. We didn’t have time to explore fully here.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Doing some shopping in JR Hakodate Station.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Bought the creamy cheesecake soufflé from Pastry Snaffles – A well known Hakodate delicacy ¥1150 for a box of 8. We wanted to buy a box back to Singapore but weren’t able to as the expiry date is rather short and had to be consume in 6 days time.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Taking the Airport Bus (by Hakodate Teisan Bus which operates every 20 minutes) from JR Hakodate Bus Terminal. ¥300 per trip to Hakodate Airport (20 minutes duration).

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Entrance of Hakodate Airport.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Check-in counter for our ANA domestic flight to Tokyo.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Observation deck on the 3rd floor.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Hakodate Airport.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Mocha coffee ¥500 at Misuzu Coffee while waiting for our flight.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Departure gate area waiting for boarding.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

I noticed a very intuitive feature whereby the folks in the departure area can still talk to people outside. They picked up the phone with the corresponding number (e.g, 3) and start talking away.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

The flight from Hakodate to Haneda Airport only takes approximately 1 hr and 20 mins. Waiting for our luggage.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

At the basement of Haneda Airport, we took Tokyo Monorail Rapid to Hamamatsucho Station and transfer to JR Yamanote Line to our destination of Ueno Station. ¥630 per person and the journey takes approximately 40 min.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Our cozy hotel in Ueno. 5 min walk from JR Ueno Station.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

The bathroom. I like the use of white color rather then the usual cream color. It makes the toilet brighter and look cleaner.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Headed for our late lunch at a nearby Japanese gyudon chain – Matsuya. You will see more of the electronic ordering machines here in Tokyo!

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Grilled Beef Set ¥480.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Large Curry Rice Set ¥480.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Shopping at “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley) at Ueno. It was traditionally a wholesale market for candy and snacks. Also commonly referred as “Ameyoko”.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Hundreds of stall selling from fishes, crabs, vegetables, clothes, cosmetics, green tea, sport shoes, etc.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Taito Station – Game arcade. Sighting of folks wearing surgical mask is common in Japan – used when they are having cold or prevention against hay fever, etc.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Lord of Vermilion is a fantasy card-based arcade game produced by Square Enix. I am a fan of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series! I stayed glued to view people play even though I don’t understand Japanese. 🙂

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A cute game for children whereby they have to jump constantly and turn the handle bar in order to move and steer the character on screen.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Ameya Yokocho is really crowded during the evening time. Maybe working folks have just knock off and was doing some shopping prior to going home.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A stall selling döner kebab – very much well-received by locals.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Discounted sale of clothes and sports apparels.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Look at the crowd. 🙂

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Tokudaiji Temple. Accidentally chance upon it in the bustle of Ameyoko.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Niki no Kashi (Niki’s Snacks) – a discount snacks and food store that you can grab loads of stuff back to your home country.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Takoyaki stall. Looks popular.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Kirin Tea Drink ¥150.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Keisei Ueno Station – For taking Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport. We will be taking this in a few days time.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A shop selling crepes and I noted that mostly are girls queuing. Sweet tooth?

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Some photos of the buildings around Ueno follows.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Nakacho – seems like rows of restaurants here?

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

McDonald’s Japan – McPork Set Meal, Teriyaki Chicken Set Meal and Shaka Shaka Chicken ¥1180.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

McDonald’s Japan – McPork.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Shaka Shaka Chicken with black pepper. You put the black pepper into the bag and shake it. Once done, open it and consume it!

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Anyone game for adult movies? 😛

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

On our way back, passed by JR Ueno Station – one of the major railway station in Tokyo.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Numerous eateries can be found here.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Tokyo Banana in JR Ueno Station. We noted that we will come back and buy it in the next few days before we leave Tokyo.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Back at the hotel, it’s time for snacks – Snaffles from Hakodate. Note the manufacture and expiry date – 6 days.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Pastry Snaffles that just came out from the refrigerator.

A Day in Hakodate & Tokyo

Snaffles – Extremely delicious cheese soufflé.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

13th May 2009 – Nice weather when I woke up around 7am. As it was still early, I went to Onsen to freshen up. Nothing beats having a hot spring bath in the cool morning hours.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Using the 2 coupons issued yesterday, we went to the restaurant for our breakfast. There was quite a selection available.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

This is what I have taken for the first round. It’s a buffet so 10 or 20 rounds is fine as long you don’t burst your stomach. 😛

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Morning walk around the lake. The weather and fog have cleared up.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A magnificent mountain beyond the Nakajima Islands (captured in zoom mode). Looks like Mount Fuji?

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Sukara against the clear blue sky.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Duck-shaped boats for hire.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

The counter for cruise ride around Lake Toya.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Flowers along the banks of Lake Toya.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

The Pleasure Boat ride that we wanted to take yesterday to see the fireworks.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Tranquil place for relaxation. Although the sun is out, but it’s still chilly whenever the wind blows.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A really amazing place to be!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

More beautiful sakura!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Spotted the boat that was used to launch the firework displays.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Checked-out and went to the bus stop opposite Kohan Tei to wait for the bus to JR Toya Station. The morning wind is extremely chilling and that is why we left out luggage at the bus stop and went to hide behind a building. Ha ha!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Bus ride to JR Toya ¥320 per person. Bus walkway was quite cramped and there isn’t any place to put our luggage so we just left it on the seats where it’s not occupied.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

The view in front of JR Toya station.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Entrance of JR Toya station.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Lake Toya was chosen to host the Group of Eight summit in 2008. We were glad that we have also visited Lake Toya. 🙂

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Tickets from Toya to Hakodate on Hokuto 8. ¥4830 per person.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Waiting for train to arrive.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

After the conductor checked our tickets, we were told to wait at a certain platform as we did not purchased reserved seats.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Inside the train, it was quite comfortable ride for me as I was enjoying music on my phone. My partner was playing PSP throughout the journey!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

I guess it was more comfortable for this chap here! Wahaha! Oh yes, the seats can swivel so that it can face each other (see above) – ideal for groups of 3 or 4 while traveling.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Menu showing the prices of food that can be ordered on the train.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

After 1 hour and 45 minutes journey, we reach Hakodate Station.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

At Tourist Information Center (JR Hakodate station), we purchase 1 day pass for unlimited rides on bus (excluding airport bus) and streetcars (trams) at ¥1000 per adult. Alternatively, you may also just buy 1 day pass for streetcars only at ¥600 per adult. We also got a free guide book for “Romantic Hakodate”.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Walk 5 mins from JR Hakodate to our hotel. We were allowed to check-in even though it was only 1.30pm. It was stated check-in timing only at 3pm during our reservation and we were planning to leave our luggage if we reach early.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Toilet.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Lunch time – we went around searching for “Lucky Pierrot” – a fast food chain that can only be found in Hakodate. Finally found it after asking a kind person.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Checking out the menu as I heard that Lucky Pierrot serves whale burger. I wanted to try it out of curiosity but couldn’t find it.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Omelette rice, side dishes, ice cream, shakes, drink, etc are available as well.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Inside of Lucky Pierrot. It was starting to drizzle a bit outside. 🙁

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Lucky Pierrot Chinese Chicken Burger ¥350.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Lucky Pierrot Egg Burger ¥380. Look at the sauce and egg flowing out……it’s absolutely delicious!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Yeah! The rain has stopped! After the fantastic lunch, we went to the bus station to take bus to to Fort Goryokaku. It is accessible by streetcars (trams) as well but will need to walk further (20mins). Since we had the unlimited rides for bus as well, we were advised by the service staff in Tourist Information Center to go for bus as it will only take 10mins walk.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

On the bus and checking out the ticket and payment machine.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Goryokaku Tower. You can pay ¥840 to go up the tower to have a bird’s eye view of Fort Goryokaku.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A ship display in Goryokaku Park.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

History of Goryokaku?

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Scene of flowers can be seen almost everything.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Cannons used in olden times.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Tulips of various colors.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Goryokaku Park is a popular place for hanami with over 1500 cherry tress. But we are a couple of days late and the sakura have withered already.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

This is where I would park myself to enjoy hanami. 🙂

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A playful shot of our shadows.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Some duck-like animal? I am unable to correctly identify it. Haha!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Taking the streetcar (tram) to Yunokawa Hot Spring.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

The locals use these streetcars frequently too so it’s quite packed at times. Be prepared to stand.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Yunokawa Hot Spring.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A free foot bath near the Hakodate Tramway’s Yunokawa Onsen Station (opened all day and night).

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

You can soak your tired legs here.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Another kind of trams. We will be taking it back to Hakodate Eki Mae station to go back to hotel and equip ourselves with more warm clothing. In the afternoon, despite have sun shining, it was quite cold. We reckon that it will be much colder in the night, especially when we up high at Mount Hakodate (our next destination).

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

This tram is quite empty this time round and we managed to get seats.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

On our way back to hotel, a cute sign on the walkway – Crab at Hakodate Morning Market. There are several kinds of the same sign with different content along the walkway.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Hakodate Morning Market. It is closed now.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Getting our dinner from a ramen stall opposite Hakodate Morning Market.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Seafood Ramen ¥1050.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Charsiu Miso Ramen ¥730.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Amazing view from the top of Mount Hakodate. We took a bus from Hakodate Station Bus Terminal and the fare per adult one way is ¥360. But as we have purchased 1 day pass for unlimited rides on bus (excluding airport bus) and streetcars (trams), we did not need to pay as it can be used here. The journey takes about 30 mins to top of Mt. Hakodate.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

You can also take the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway to the top of Mt. Hakodate at ¥640 one way / ¥1160 return.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Even with extra clothing, it is still cold here as the wind is extremely chilling (around 9 degrees temperature). My partner is not out in the open for long as she went to seek warmth in the building (shopping in a souvenir and food store). Ha ha!

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

My opinion is that the night view from Mount Hakodate is indeed true to what multiple sources have quoted “among the top 3 best night view in the world”.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Mount Hakodate. Although the night view is nice and romantic but I wasn’t prepared for the huge crowds (tour groups, school excursions, etc) on top, jostling for space to capture the view on their cameras.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Took the bus back but alighted at Jujigai and walk to Hakodate Beer.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Time is 8pm but the inside was quite empty (other 1 more table was occupied other then ours). Most shops closed quite early here in Hakodate.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Menu for the drinks and food.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Ordered a plate of assorted sausages at ¥850 to go with the beer.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Red Brick Warehouse (Kanemori Warehouse). It is very quiet here.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Near the bay area. There are sightseeing boats here but it’s already closed for the day.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Red Brick Warehouse (Kanemori Warehouse).

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Some restaurants are found here but seems like most are closed.

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

Although weather is cold, I had the craving to slurp on Hokkaido Milk ice-cream ¥62. Ha ha!A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A Day in Lake Toya & Hakodate

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

12th May 2009 – Breakfast at hotel and then proceed to check-out as today we will be leaving to Lake Toya. We need to check-out by 10am but as our free transport to Lake Toya is scheduled at 1.30pm, we left our luggage at the good care of the hotel before strolling around. The good thing is that the storage area is behind the front desk counter, which means that any possibility of losing thing is greatly minimize. Then we went to Pole Town to have our caffeine fix at Starbucks¥860 Café Mocha x 2.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Ham & Cheese Bun.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Custard Cream Bun. Both total up to ¥225.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

At most JR or Subway station, there are actually various sizes of lockers for you to store your stuffs temporary. The small size locker is priced at ¥300 for 12hour storage. Valuables are not encouraged to be left in lockers.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

After lazing in Starbucks watching people go by for 2 hours, it’s time to head back to hotel to claim our luggage. A coupon was issued when we left our luggage and this have to be hand over to the hotel staff. Instead of taking subway, we decided that we had some spare time to walk to Sapporo while lugging our baggage along.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Took a rest at Odori Park. 😛

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Reach our destination JR Sapporo Station after 20 mins walk. An accomplishment!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The meeting point for the free bus transport to Lake Toya – Esta Shopping Mall (a prominent building outside of JR Sapporo). We have to carry our luggage up the stairs. 🙁

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

At the top of the stairs, the building is JR Sapporo.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Some other malls/buildings facing JR Sapporo. It’s a gloomy day and seems like going to rain anytime. Glad that we have reached the meeting point prior to any downpour as we will be drenched as we do not have any raincoats or umbrellas with us.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

2nd floor of Esta (also our meeting place). “BIC Camera” store for you to shop while waiting for transport.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

I also noticed that there is a Sightseeing Bus Counter which provides “Sapporo One-Day Tour” at ¥5700, “Otaru Night View Tour” at ¥5800, “Lilac Tour” at ¥4100, etc. For the more adventurous, there is also “Susukino Transsexual Stage Show Tour” at ¥9900. Please do share with me on your experience if you do go. 😛

Information shown are Tour, Departure Time, Arrival Time, Fare and Operation Period – English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean language are available.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

My favourite drink – Calpis Water ¥150. Smooth, refreshing and creamy taste with slight hint of milk, somehow like Yakult. There is also a carbonated version – Calpis Soda, which is exceptionally good thirst quencher during a hot afternoon.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Folks queuing to show hotel reservation confirmation and will be arranged a seat number.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Apparently, this makeshift counter provides free bus transport services to various accommodation (if you have reserved with them) under Noguchi Kanko Group. From left to right, Kohan Tei (Lake Toya), Gokiraku Tei (Lake Toya), Daini Meisui Tei (Kitayuzawa), Meisui Tei (Kitayuzawa) and Horohoro Sanso (Kitayuzawa). Our destination is Kohan Tei!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

From the bus window, I took a snap of the scenery. The weather is not looking good.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Simply love the feeling of natural surrounding. Especially when there aren’t any tall modern buildings in sight.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A stop point for folks to answer the call of nature or just to buy some food. A slight drizzle have already started. This area is foggy and cold. I wonder whether we are at the highlands?

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

It’s so foggy that visibility is reduced. But I love the feeling! It’s like I am in the clouds. 🙂

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Continuing our journey on the bus. It’s May but along the way, I still noticed some patches of snow.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

After 2hr 30mins ride on the free shuttle bus, reached Kohan Tei. The view of the room standing at the door entrance.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Walkway to entrance door. The room is a combination of western and traditional setup – you can either sleep on the western bed or futon.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The tatami floored traditional room – comes with table, chair with zabuton and a separate armrest. No shoes on the tatami, please. Yes, the room is facing the lake!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Exploring the wardrobe – found our yukata and toiletries. Storage space available under the wardrobe.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The closet containing our futons.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Sneak preview of the magnificent view from our room window.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Toilet. Always small in Japan.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A garden (taken from room window).

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Still drizzling but we still venture out!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A foot bath at the ground floor.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

More fog building up. Weather is cold!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The right building is Kohan Tei.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The rain keeps getting bigger. I was hoping the free fireworks display will not be canceled due to bad weather.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Some shop facing the entrance of Kohan Tei. We wanted to take the Usuzan Ropeway Car but the weather forbids us to stray away far from hotel. The Usuzan Ropeway Car ride will take you to the top of Mount Usu, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Lake Toya. For your information, Mount Usu is an active volcano!

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Toyako Manseikaku (Beside Kohan Tei).

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

More shops. We also halted our plans to take the Pleasure Boat, which takes you round the lake and the neighboring four islands that make up Nakajima Island. Our main intention is view the firework display from the boat trip.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The sky is turning dark. We decided to have dinner earlier as we couldn’t go anywhere else.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Japanese dinner is served in-room. This dinner set is part of the room package.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

The food is very well presented. 🙂

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Dessert. It’s not ice cream but more like jelly and have a milky taste.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Yeah!!! Fireworks display still proceeded despite the drizzle. The 20mins fireworks display happens every night at 8.45pm during the period from 28th April to 31st Oct and is subjected to weather conditions as the fireworks are launched from a moving boat.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

I went downstairs to try capturing more photos.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

My camera doesn’t seem to be able to capture good shots of the firework so I went back to room to enjoy the rest of the fireworks from the room window. After viewing the fireworks display, I went to Onsen. Didn’t take any photo during then but it was a nice bath with fabulous view. For more information, please visit here.

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

Some snacks follows – Calbee Potato Chips ¥158 and Sapporo Classic (only sold in Hokkaido) ¥278. The 2 green cards are our breakfast coupons (part of the hotel package as well). Was quite disappointed that the rain have caused us to miss some attractions at Lake Toya but nevertheless still enjoyable. Went to sleep in anticipation of fine weather for next day!A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Sapporo & Lake Toya

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

11th May 2009 – Buffet breakfast at the hotel where you are allowed to eat till you are full. This is also the breakfast that that we had over the past 2 days (9th & 10th May 2009). Consists of different varieties of Onigiri, sausages, salad, eggs, miso soup, croissant, etc.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

We took the subway from Susukino Station to Sapporo Station as we need to take JR to the historic and romantic city of Otaru using the Sapporo-Otaru Welcome Pass. For more information, you may want to read “A Day in Sapporo 1“.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

While waiting for the train to Otaru, a JR train that serves another route stops at the platform.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Alighted at Minami Otaru Station instead of the popular Otaru Station so that I can walk down towards the touristy Otaru area while exploring the quieter side of Otaru.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The entrance of Minami Otaru Station.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Following instructions from signboard, we walk to Kikkogura Sake Museum. I believe it’s also known as Tanaka Sake Factory Kikkogura.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

After requesting for an English pamphlet (which contains the process of sake brewing), we went to tour around the sake factory. Rice used for making sake is slightly bigger then the regular rice that we eat and they are polished down 30% to 60% (according to the brewing standard) until it’s left with the middle white part. Also as 80% of sake is water, Kikkogura uses cold and pure underground water.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The rice goes through a delicate process of brewing before it’s stored.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

One of the many displays that show what was worn during the olden days when brewing sake.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Displays of sake barrels. After which, we went on to the sake shop which offers a varieties of sake. You can try 10 different kinds of sake for free here! Find the one you like based on the colour, smell and taste. We managed to find something we like – 300ml at ¥1020.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The Otaru Steam Clock in front of Otaru-Orugel-Doh (Otaru Music Box Museum).

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Entrance to the Otaru Music Box Museum is free. We went in to check out what Otaru is famous for – Music Boxes! There are displays of hundreds of different kinds of music boxes, both large and small.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Such delicate workmanship! It’s definitely a piece of art!

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Some other designs. You can also try to build your own music box here under the guidance of their staff from the price of ¥1800 onwards. We didn’t go for this as it requires 1 hour for the adhesive to dry.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Found myself being captivated by the table lamp design.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Other souvenirs and crafts can be found here as well. We bought a small pink colour carousel-styled music box at ¥2100, which will turn round-and-round while playing music titled “One Love”.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Passed by this shop but didn’t explore further. Might be a souvenir shop?

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

We had a melon ice-cream here at ¥300.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Otaru Post Office.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Fantasy World Otaru.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A life-like statue of a bear and dog. Notice the “Hello Kitty” face nearby? Hehe.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Looks like a place for you to experience snow and ice?

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Another speciality of Otaru – glass products. Here you can try your hands at glassware making. Prices start from ¥2000 onwards and take about 10mins each.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

There are assortments of glassware for you to choose to make.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Bakudan Yaki at ¥380. A giant version of Takoyaki and top up with mayonnaise and bonito flakes. The contents of the wheat flour batter are cabbage, quail eggs, shrimp, octopus, squid, sausage, etc.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Otaru Pier – such a beautiful scene.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A carpark inside a warehouse? 🙂

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Otaru Beer.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

At the entrance of Otaru Beer. Re-filling in progress!

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Otaru Beer is medieval and German styled restaurant that serves both food and beverages. There is also a tour of the process of beer making in accordance to German traditions. Admission is free.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The highlight of visiting Otaru Beer. Sampling of the freshly brewed beer!

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Otaru Weiss (small) on the left at ¥490. The other is Otaru Pilsner (small) also at ¥490.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The famous canal of Otaru – with the old warehouses along it’s bank. I can imagine the nostalgic and romantic feeling that it offers during night time as well as winter season.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A musician playing music along the banks. If you like what you have heard, you can even buy his music ablum CD.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Another seller of drawings and crafts.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The other view of Otaru Canal (Otaru Unga).

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Lunch time – walk around and decided to have ramen. Total for 2 ramen below is ¥1590.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Miso Ramen.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Shoyu (“soy sauce”) Ramen.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A historical looking shophouse. Below are some other buildings captured along the way.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Kitakaro Cafe for some snacks and coffee. Hmm….did we eat a lot for the day already?

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Purchased our snacks and went outside of the cafe to sit at the outdoor section. Kitakaro is famous for their Baumkuchen and we wanted to buy it but the expiry is only 4 days from date of purchase. It won’t make it back to Singapore and will only end up in our stomach. Haha!

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

¥500 for the set – Coffee, Cream Puff & Ice Cream.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The cream texture is just right as it not too sweet or oily. The outer crust is crispy yet soft and shatters at every bite.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Wine shop.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

This shop sells “Hello Kitty” stuffs.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

An interesting looking shop. I wander what they sell? CDs? 😛

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Former Temiya Line – opened in 1880 and was defunct in 1985. It is Hokkaido’s first and Japan’s third railway line.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Parts of it have made way for the road.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

At the entrance of JR Otaru Station to board train back to JR Sapporo Station (still using the Sapporo-Otaru Welcome Pass).

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

As we still have some spare time and also nearby JR Sapporo Station, we decided to head north to visit Hokkaido University Botanic Garden (10 mins walk).

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

In this 13.3 hectare garden, there are around 4,000 taxa of plants that are native to Hokkaido to be found.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A snapshot of the greenery.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Signs for Poplar Avenue, Flowering Shrub Garden and Bust of Dr. Inazo Nitobe.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The magnificent view of the poplar trees.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A row of pink flowers. I wonder what are they called? It will be good if there is a small sign near the trees to tell me. 🙁

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Dinner time is drawing near. We headed to F-45 building (opposite Sapporo Tokyu Inn, 3 mins walk from Susukino Station) in search of Ebi Kani Gassen (12th Floor) for our craving for crab buffet.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Eat all you can in 90 min. The set we chose is priced at ¥3675 per person and it comes with king crab legs, snow crab legs, shrimp tempura, shrimp sushi, crab sushi, tempura shrimp sushi and egg custard (chawanmushi). You can also add in another ¥1050 for all you can drink beer too!

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A close-up view of the fresh and tasty king crab and snow crab legs. Did I hear your stomach rumbling? 😛

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

From the 12th floor lift lobby, you can see a clear view of Norubesa (a building with a huge Ferris wheel). After which, took a short stroll back to hotel with our huge stomach bulge.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

Back at the hotel, we decided to do our laundry. Instructions in English are available.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

The washing detergent vending machine which dispense one small pack good for 1 full load wash at ¥30.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

There are actually 4 sets of washing machines and dryer available – 2 set on each side. At that point of time, all 4 sets are not in use. The washing machine usage costs ¥200 and the dryer costs ¥100 for 30 mins usage. From our recent experience, you will need a minimum of 1.5 hours run (¥300) for your clothes to dry.

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Otaru & Sapporo

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

9th May 2009 – After a good night sleep from yesterday’s exhaustion, we woke up early and ate the free breakfast at hotel. Then, proceed to Susukino Subway Station (3mins away from my hotel) – still empty as it’s still early. 7.40am on a Saturday morning 🙂

A Day in Sapporo 1

Tickets counter – English available at both the table of fares as well as the machines. We didn’t buy any tickets as we were using the one-day card (for Sapporo City Subway only) that comes with the Sapporo-Otaru Welcome Pass. The Sapporo-Otaru Welcome Pass (All JR Hokkaido trains between any stations in Sapporo and Otaru Station and all subway lines in Sapporo) can be purchased from JR Information Desk (JR Sapporo Station West Exit) at ¥1,500 per passenger.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Subway platform – also empty. Took from Susukino Station to Odori Station. It’s only a station away but since we have the 1 day Subway pass, so decided to make full use of it.

A Day in Sapporo 1

From Odori Station, we took a 5min short stroll to Nijo Fish Market – a cluster of stalls selling fresh and dried seafood as well as vegetables.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Prawns, scallops, sea urchins awaits you to devour them. And It’s all live! LOL.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Crabs too! The stall that I patronize also provides the cooking of the seafood that you purchase from them so that you can eat them fresh.

A Day in Sapporo 1

The stall owner on noticing that I was snapping away on my camera, immediately hauled up a King Crab for me to shoot. Such a nice gesture! We bought a 500g packet of premium grade large size Dried Scallops at ¥5,000 from him too.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Proceeded on with the journey to Maruyama Park (link in Japanese) from Odori. The whole platform to ourselves again.

A Day in Sapporo 1

The underpass towards Maruyama Koen. Maruyama Koen is the most popular “Cherry Blossom Viewing Spot” in Sapporo and it houses over 1500 cherry trees. It is bustling with people during the “Hanami” period. Prior to reaching and to my dissapoinment, I have already knew that I have missed the full cherry blossoming by 1 day and it’s already withering (updates from Tenki – Japanese only). Nevertheless, the planned trip still went on.

Notice the animals emblems on the floor – believe suppose to build anticipation to the nearby Sapporo Maruyama Zoo which houses more then 200 speices of living things. Other nearby attractions inlcude Okurayama Ski Jump, Sapporo Winter Sports Museum, Asahiyama Memorial Park, Rose Garden Chizaki, etc.

A Day in Sapporo 1

A very beautiful and grand building just right in front of Maruyama Koen (5 mins walk from Maruyama Koen Subway Station). Also a lot of cars are unloading their wares here.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Upon closure inspection, it’s actually hosting a wedding reception. 🙂

A Day in Sapporo 1

The location signboard that shows your whereabouts and the nearby facilities. From it, I can see that there is a baseball stadium, track and field, theme park, etc.

A Day in Sapporo 1

The sun shining on the flowers makes it look so vibrant.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Tall trees that seems to reach out for the sky!

A Day in Sapporo 1

Walk in deeper to Maruyama Park and saw this sight everywhere. Folks lay out their floor mats and wares (table, chairs, food, charcoal, drinks, beer, etc). What amaze me is that it’s 9.00am in the morning and many people are already there to choose the best location and mark their terriorty. Maybe it’s a planned weekend hanami (still continue even the hanami period is over) and boozing session with family and friends.

A Day in Sapporo 1

After strolling down the park, the feeling that I got is both tranquil and relaxing (with cool and fresh breezes intermittently blowing). Ah, there is a lingering smell of barbecue food in the air as well. That makes my stomach rumble. :=D

A Day in Sapporo 1

A row of stalls selling various drinks, food, toys and souvenirs.

A Day in Sapporo 1

A close up view on one of the drink and food stall.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Another stall selling blown-up toys for children. It’s hung on to a stick at one end and held by children on the other end, much like Chinese Lantern style. I wonder whether they can be lighted up?

A Day in Sapporo 1

The walkway towards Hokkaido Shrine.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Another view of the walkway towards Hokkaido Shrine. It’s a cooling pleasant walk despite that the sun is shining bright.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Near the entrance of Hokkaido Shrine, there is a Chōzuya (stone wash basin) whereby worshipers and visitors performed cleansing (purification) by washing their hands and mouths prior to praying. Using the dipper, first rinse the left hand then the right, after which rinse the mouth with water from the cupped left hand. The washing of hands with water is called Temizu.

A Day in Sapporo 1

The grand entrance of Hokkaido Shrine.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Here’s the procedure on how to pray at a Shinto Shrine. Facing the enshrined god, deposit some money into the offering box and then bow twice. Clap your hand twice and after that bow one more time.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Amazing and delicate architecture. Simply love the use of the gold (not sure whether it’s real gold).

A Day in Sapporo 1

A showcase of the famous and popular sake from Hokkaido. During ancient times, sake used to be produced in the Shrine’s wine hall.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Another view.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Spotted a wedding ceremony on-going at Hokkaido. This draws a lot of attention and causes many tourists to snap away (including me).

A Day in Sapporo 1

Terrific scenery – with all the beautiful colors standing out.

A Day in Sapporo 1

A macro shot of the flowers.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Another macro shots of flowers.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Lunch time – Teriyaki Chicken Burger Set Meal at McDonald’s ¥590.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Ebi Filet-O Set Meal at McDonald’s ¥630.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Ishiya Chocolate Factory – A short walk from Miyanosawa Subway Station. Production tour is at ¥600 per adult and it comes with one piece of their well-known Shiroi Koibito chocolate. Before reaching the production viewing gallery, there is a short walk that takes you through the history and culture of chocolate.

A Day in Sapporo 1

The production plant for their famous flagship product Shiroi Koibito – a soft flavoured layer of white chocolate sandwiched in between two thin layers of crisp cookies. Absolutely delicious!

A Day in Sapporo 1

Spotted Astro Boy statue after the end of the tour. The stairs takes you down to the shop where it has the whole selection of products Ishiya is offering. Bought Ishiya Shiroi Koibito (24 Qty) at ¥1480 and Ishiya Shiroi Koibito (27 Qty) at ¥1785. Yeah!

A Day in Sapporo 1

Ishiya Shiroi Koibito Park.

A Day in Sapporo 1

Beautilful park with disneyland styled buildings. At the end of it, there is a store selling Ishiya Ice-Cream (same flavouring as their chocolate) at ¥250. More views of the park follows.

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

LOL

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

Ebi Fillet-O Set Meal at McDonald’s

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo 1

A Day in Sapporo

A Day in Sapporo
7th May 2009 – at Changi Airport Terminal 3 awaiting for SQ flight on A380 to Tokyo Narita Airport. It’s a night flight departing at 2340 hours (GMT+8).

A Day in Sapporo
At the departure hall.

A Day in Sapporo
8th May 2009 – finally reach Tokyo Narita Airport T1 around 0750 hours (GMT+9) after the seven hours journey. While waiting for the domestic flight to Sapporo, went to buy 2-Day Tokyo Metro Open Ticket at arrival lobby as we will be back to Tokyo in a week time. This is good for unlimited rides on all Tokyo Metro lines . ¥980 for adult.

A Day in Sapporo
Wander around Narita Airport T1 shopping mall. Also had a Starbucks Cafe Mocha to perk up as I didn’t sleep much during the flight -maybe around 2 hours as I was busy watching movies. The selection of movies is huge on SQ A380 flight. 🙂

A Day in Sapporo
The outside of Narita Airport. A downpour just ended.

A Day in Sapporo
Reached Chitose Airport after another 1h 40mins journey on ANA. Went to basement to take JR to Sapporo station, after which transfer to Subway to continue journey to Susukino (to check-in to hotel).

A Day in Sapporo
Hotel room – small but really clean. Have almost all the things we required.

A Day in Sapporo
Hotel toilet – small too! But still satisfied with it.

A Day in Sapporo
Was pretty hungry so quickly dump our luggage in the hotel and head over to “Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley)” . It was still early so there wasn’t much customers around. Walk up and down the alley several times before making up our mind on the selection of the restaurant – chose the one that “Takuya Kimura” patronize before (photo and signature seen in shop).

A Day in Sapporo
Sapporo Crab Ramen. ¥1500.

A Day in Sapporo
Sapporo Char Siu Miso Ramen. ¥800.

A Day in Sapporo
It was one of the best ramen I had in my life and it’s also really nice to down all the hot soup in the cool weather. We chat-up with the chef and he mentioned that he’s been to Singapore Takashimaya to introduce and cook Sapporo Ramen before. He even showed me the printed brochure and named a few Singapore food that he likes – “Char Kway Teow“, “Ice Kachang“, “Hainanese Chicken Rice” and “Cai Tow Kway“. Nice and friendly fellow.

A Day in Sapporo
After the meal, did some walking around until we reach Odori Park.

A Day in Sapporo
A shot of flowers in Odori Park. Knew that I will be back here over the next few days so decided to keep my finger away from the shutter.

A Day in Sapporo
Sapporo underground shopping malls (Pole Town and Aurora Town).

A Day in Sapporo
There are numerous restaurants, cafés, clothes, souvenir shops, etc here. It also provides access to other departmental stores and buildings.

A Day in Sapporo
Temperature is around 14 deg (not including chill factor from the wind). Headed back to hotel early as we were tired after long journey – 2 flights, 1 JR ride and 1 Subway ride totaling approximately 10 hours. Slept at 9pm so the next day will be fresh. LOL.A Day in Sapporo
